Hurricane season is officially June 1-October 30.  And we can get hit pretty hard.  That's why this weekend is a great weekend to stock up on supplies.  Here are some things that you can get:

  • Mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers
  • Nonelectric can openers
  • Portable self-powered radios, including two-way and weather band radios
  • Batteries, single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt or 9 volt)
  • First aid kits
  • Nonelectric coolers and ice chests for food storage
  • Fuel containers
  • Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Portable self-powered light sources (including battery operated)
  • Hatchets and axes
  • Portable generators
  • Emergency ladders
  • Reusable and artificial ice products
  • Tarps and other plastic sheeting
  • Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
  • Hurricane shutters

The comptroller's website says "There is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase, and you do not need to issue an exemption certificate to claim the exemption."

Make sure you check the comptroller's website for verification on what does and does not qualify, and how additional charges (like delivery, shipping, handling, transportation) could affect the price.
